¶ And certis yif it nere to longe to here
I wold haue tolde fully the manere
How wonnen was the Reigne of femenye

By theseus and by his chiualrye
And of the gret bataile for the nones
Bytwixen Athenes and Amazones
And how asseged was ypolita
The faire hardy quene of Sithia

And of the fest that was at hir weddyng
And of the tempest at hir hoom comyng
But al that thinge I mote as now forbere
I haue god wote a large felde to ere
And waike ben the oxen in my plow

The remenant of my tale is longe y now
I wol not letten eke noon of thir route
Lat euery felaw telle his tale aboute.
And lat se now who shall the souper wynne
And ther I lefte. I. wol ayen bygynne.
¶ Here bygynneth the knyghtes tale.

This duke of whom I make of mencyoun
Whan he was comen almost to the toun
In al his wele in his most pryde
He was war as he caste his eye asyde
Wher that ther kneled in the hye weye

A compaignye of ladyes twey and tweye
Ech after other clad in clothes blake
But swych a crye and swych a wo thei make
That in this worlde nys creature lyuynge
That herde swiche a nother waymentynge

And of this crie thei nolden neuer stenten
Til thei the reynes of his brydel henten
¶ What folke ben ye that at myn hom comynge
Parturben so my fest wyth criynge
Quod theseus haue so gret envye

Of myn honour that thus compleyn and crye
Or who hath ȝow mysboden or offended
And telleth me yif it may ben amended
And whi that ye ben clothed thus in blak
