But yif a clerk koude doon a gentil dede

As wel as eny of yow it is no drede
¶ Sir I relesse the thi thousand pound
As thow right now were crope out of the ground
Ne neuer or now ne haddest y knowen me
For syr I wol nat take a peny of the

For al my crafte ne nought for my trauaille
Thow hast y payde wel for my vitaille
Hit is y nough and fare wel haue good day
And took his hors and forth he goth his way
¶ Lordynges this questioun than wold I axe now

Which was the moost fre as thinketh yow
Now telleth me er that ye ferther wende
I kan namore my tale is at an ende .
Here bigynneth the maister of phisikes tale
Ther was as telleth Titus Lyuyus
A knyght that called was virginius
Fulfild of honour and of worthinesse
And stronge of freendes and of gret riches

¶ This knyght a doughter had bi his wif
And neuer had he mo in al his lif
Faire was this mayde in excellent beaute
Abouen euery wight that man may se
For nature hath with souereigne diligence

I formed hir in so gret excellence
As though she wolde seyn lo I nature
Thus can I forme and peynte a creature
Whan that me list who can me contrefete
¶ Pigmalion nat though he ay forge and bete

Or graue or peȳte for I dar wel seyn
Apelles zenzis shulde worke in veyn
For that is the formour pincipal

Hath maked me his viker general
To forme and peynten erthelich creatures
Right as me list and ech thing in my cure is
Vnder the moone that may wane and waxe
And for my werke right no thing wol I axe
