As demen of my self that thow were one
I wol beleue wel that I am none
And housbond sholde not ben inquisityf
Of goddes priuytees ne of his wyf

So he mow fynde goddes fisoun there
Of the remenaunt nedeth noght to enquere
¶ What shuld I sey but this Millere
He nolde his wordes for no man forbere
But tolde his cherles tale in his manere

Me thinketh yit that I shuld rehersen here
And therfore euery gentil wyght I pay
For goddes loue demeth not that I say
Of euyl entent but for I mot reherce
Her tales al be thei bettr or werce

Or elles falsen som of my Matere
And ther fore who list it noght to here
Turne ouer the leef and chese another tale
For he shal fynde ynow grete and smale
¶ Of storial thing that toucheth gentylles

And ek Moralite and holynes
Blameth not me yif that ye chese amys
The Miller is a cherle I know wel this
So was the Reue and mony other moo
And harlotrye thei told bothe two .

Auyseth you now and put me oute of blame
And ek men shold noght make ernest of game .

Whilom ther was dwellyng in Oxenford
A ryche gnof that gestes held to bord
And of his crafte he was a carpentere
Wyth him ther was dwellyng a pore Scolere

Was torned for to lerne astrologye
And couth a certeyn of conclusiouns
To demen by interogaciouns
Yif that men asked him in certeyn houres
