But nathales I wil nat tellen it yit

A Prentis whilom dwelled in our Citee
And of a crafte of vitailles was he
Gaillard he was as goldefynche in the shawe
Broun as a bery a propre shorte felawe

With lokkes blake I kembid ful fetisly
Dauncen he koude so wel and Iolily
That he was cleped perkyn reuelour
He was as ful of loue and paramour
As is the hyue ful of hony swete

Wel was the wenche with him myght mete
At euery bridale wolde he synge and hoppe
He loued bet the tauerne than the shoppe
For whan ther was any ridyng in the Chepe
Out of the shoppe thider wolde he lepe

Til that he hadde al the sight I seyn
And daunced wel and nold nat come agayn
And gadred him a meynye of his soort
To hoppe and synge and make such desport
And there thei setten steuene for to mete

To pley at dys in such a strete
For in the toun nas ther no prentys
That fairer koude cast apaire of dys
Than perkyn koude and ther to he was fre
Of his despence in place of piuyte

That his Maister wel in his chaffare
Ful ofte tyme he fonde his box ful bare
For sothly a prentys a reuelour
That haunteth dys ryot and paramour
His maistyr shal in his shoppe abye
