For thefte and Riot thei ben conuertible

¶ This Ioly prentys with his maister bood
Til he was nygh owte of his perntys hood
Al were he snybbed bothen erly and late
And some tyme lad with reuel to newegate
But atte last his Maister him bithought

Vppon a day whan he his paper sought
Of a prouerbe that seith this same word
Wel bet is Roten appul out of hord
Than that it roty al the remenant
¶ So fareth it bi ariatours seruant

It is ful lasse harme to late him pace
Thanne he shende al the seruantz in the place
Therfore his maistere yaf him acquitaunce
And bad him goo with sorow and with meschaunce
And thus this Ioly prentys had his leue

Now late him Riote al the nyght or leue
And for ther nys no theef with outen a louke
That helpeth him to wasten and to souke
Of that he brybe can or borowe may
Anon he sente his bedde and his array

That loued dys and Riot and dispoort
And hadde a wif that heeld for contenance
A shoppe and swyued for hir sustenance
