Matier seiþe Salomon . That in þe drede of god man for leteþt his sinne .
¶ þe hete of þis seede is þe loue of god . & þe desire of þe Ioye pardurable ;
þis hete
draueþ þe hert of man to god ; & doþe him hate his sinne
¶ For soþely þere is
no þinge þat sauereþ so wele to a childe as þe myke of his norice ; Ne no þīge
is to him more abhōinable þat þilke melk whan it is menged wiþ oþeremete .
Riht so þe sinnful man þt loueþ his sinne it semeþ þat it is to him moste swete

¶ Penance is þe tre of lif to hē þt
it receyveñ ; And he þat holdeþ him verrey penytence is blissed after þõ verrey
sentence of Salomon
¶ In þis penitence or conticion man schal vnderstonden
.iiij. þinges ; þat is to seine what is contricione ; & whiche bien þe causes

ceyueþ in his hert for his sinnes wt sadde purpos to schriuen him & to do pe-
nance And to do neuer more sinne
¶ And þis sorwe shal bien in þis manere
As seiþe seinte Bernard . It shal be greuous & heuy & ful scharpe & poy-
nant in herte ;
First for aman haþ gult his lord & his makere ; & mor scharp
& poynant ; for he haþ agilte his fader celestial ;
& ȝit more scharp & poynāt ;
For he haþe a wreþþed & agilte him þat bouht him ; þat withe his percious
blode haþ deliuerd vs fro þe bandes of sinne And fro þe creuelte of þe deuel
And fro þe peynes of heƚƚ
¶ The causes þat ouhte to meue a man to con-
tricion bien .vj. ¶ First a man schal remembre hī of his sinnes ;

And þt more foule & abomi-
nable for ȝe trespasen so oft time as doþe þe hounde þt torneþ to eten his spew-
ynge ;
65
And ȝit bien ȝe fouler for ȝoure longe continuinge in sinne ; & ȝoure

¶ Suche manere of þouhtes maken a man to haue schame for his sinne & no-
