¶ Bot takeþ þe seker weye . þt is certeine
¶ And nowe seþen .I. haue de-
clared ȝowe what þinge is penitence ¶ Now scholne ȝe vnderstonde þt þere
bue þre accions of Penytence ;
The first is if a man be baptized after þt
he haþe sinned
¶ Seint Austine seiþe bot he be penitence for his olde sin-
ful lif ; he maie not be ginne þe newe clene lif ;
For certes if he be baptist
w oute penitence of his olde gilte ; he receyueþ þe merke of baptime . bot
not þe gace ne þe remission of his sinnes til he haue repentance verreye .
¶ Anoþere defaut is þis ; that men done dedely sinne after þat þei haue re-
¶ Þe þredde defaute is ; þat men fallen in venial sinnes
after her baptisme ; fro daie to daie
¶ Ther of seiþ seint Austine ; þat pe-
nitence of goode & hūble folke is þe penitence of euery daie
¶ The spi-
ces of penance bien þre ; þat on of hem is solempee ; anoþere is comune .
& þõ þred is piue
¶ þilke penance þat is solempne ; is in tuo maners .
As is to be put oute of holy cherche in lente for slauhter of childerne & suche
maner þinge ;
Anoþer is whan man haþ sinne\d/ openly ; of whiche sinne þe fa-
me is openly spoken in þe contre ¶ And þan holy cherche be iugement
Distreyneþ him for to do penance open .
¶ Sōme penance is þat perstes
enioynen men comunly in certeine caas as for to gone peraduentur naked
in pilgrenage or barfote .
¶ Priue penaunce is þilk þat men doū al daie
For piue sinnes of whiche we schryuen vs piuely & receyuen piue penance .
¶ Nowe schalt þu vnderstande whas behoueþ ; & is necessarie to verrei parfit
penitence ; An þes standen on þre þinges
¶ Contricio of hert . Confession-
of mouþe ; & satisfaccione
¶ For whiche seiþ Ioħn Grisostemë . Penytence
distreyneþ man to accepte benyngly euery peine þat is him enioyned wt
contricione of hert ; & schrift of mouþe & satisfacione & in wercheinge al
¶ And þis \is/ fruyte ful penitence aȝein þre þinges in whicħ .
we wreþþen our lorde ihū crist ;
þis is to seine ; be delite in þinkinge ; be re-
clischenesse in spekeinge ; be wykked sinful wyrcheinge
¶ And aȝeines þes
wikked giltes is penitence ; þat maie be likned vnto a tre
¶ þe rote of þs
tree is conticione þat hideþ him in þe hert of him þt is verraie repentant
Riht as þe rote of a tre hideþ him in þe erþe ;
¶ Of þe rote of conticione sprī-
For whiche crist seiþe in þe gospel . Doþe digne fruyte of peni-
þerefor oure lorde ihū crist seiþ þus ; Be þe fruyte of hem schal . ȝe knowe hē .
¶ Of þis rote spingeþ a seede of gace ; þe whiche sede is þe mode of seker-
nesse ; And þis seed is egre & hote ;
þe gace of þis seed spingeþ of god þoruhe
þe remembrance of þe daie of dome & one þe peines of helle
