nuseþ eke venyal sinne ; And þerefor it apperteneþ specialy to penytence ;
¶ þis preyer most bu trewly seide in verray faiþe & þat men prey to god
ordinately ; discretely & deuoutely ¶ Alweye a man schal put his wil-
le to be subiecte to þe wil of god
¶ þis orison most eke be seide wt grete
humblesse & pure honestly . & nouht to anoyance of any man ; or wom-
man ¶ It moste eke be continued wt þõ werkes of charite ;
It avayleþ
eke aȝeynes þe vices of þe soule ¶ For as seiþe seint I erom ; Befastinge
bien saued þe vices of flesche ; & be preiers þe vices of soule ;
After
þis þou schalt vnderstand þat bodely peyne stant in wakeynge ¶ For
ihū criste seiþe ; wakeþ & payeþ þt ȝe ne enter in wikked temptacione .

¶ Ȝe scholn vnder stand þat Fastinge stant in þre þinges ; In for beringe
of bodely mete & drinke ; & in for beringe of werldly Iolytees ; & ī forbe-
ringe of dedely sinne ; þis is to seye þat aman schal kepe him fro dedely
sinne ; wiþ al his myht
¶ And þou schalt vnderstand eke þat god ordey-
ned fastinges ; And to fastinges appertenen .iiij. þinges ;
largenesse to
pouer folke ; Gladnesse of hert espirituel ; nouȝht to be angred ne to
be anoyed ; ne to grocche for he fasteþ ; and also att resonable owre
for to ete be mesure ; þat is to saye þat aman schold nouht eten in
vntyme ne sitte þe langer att his table for he fasteþ
¶ þan schalt þou
vnderstand þat bodely peyne stant in discipline or techeinge be worde
or be writeinge ; or by ensample ; Also in wereinge of heyres eyþere of
Bot war þe wele þat suche manere penaūces make
nouȝt þine hert bitter or angry anoyed of þine self ¶ For better is to
kast awaie þine heir þan for to cast awey þe swettnes of oure lorde ;

¶ And þerefore seiþe seinte poule ; Cloþe ȝowe as þei þat bien
chosen of god in hert of mysericorde debonarte ; suffrance . And suche
maner of cloþinge ; of whiche ihū criste is more appaied þan of heyre or
of Aberion
¶ þan is discipline eke in knokynge on þi breste ; in scoure-
geinge wt ȝerdes in knelyinge in tribulacions ;
In suffringe paciently
wronges þat bien done to him ; & eke in pacient suffrance of Maledies
or lesinge of werldly Catel ; or wyf or childe or oþere frendes
¶ þan schal
þu vnderstande wiche þinge distourben penance ; & þis is in þre maners
þat is drede schame hope ; & wanhope ; þat is desperacione ;
And for to
speken firste of drede ; for whiche he weneþ þat he may suffur no pe-

þere aȝeines is remedye for to þinke þat bodely penance is bot schort
& lytel att þe regard of þe peyne of heƚƚ þt is cruel & so longe þat it las-
teþ wiþ outen ende
¶ Now aȝeines þe schame þat aman haþe to schry-
uen him ;
Aȝeines þe schame schal a man þinke þat by þe waye of resoū þt
he þat haþe nouht bue a schamed to do foule þinges ; Certes him ouhte not
bue aschamed to do faire þinges & goode þinges ; & þat is confessions ;
