stant in wakȳge / For Ihū Crist seith / wakyth & preyeth
that ȝe ne entre in wekkede temptacioū /

dyrstonde also that fastȳge stant in thre thȳgis / in for-
berȳge of bodyly mete & drynke / & in forberȳge of wor-
dely iolytee / & in forberȳge of dedly sȳne this is to sey-
ne that a man schal kepe hȳ frō dedly sȳne with al his
myght /
Thow schalt vndyrstonde ek that god ordey-
nede fastȳgis / And to fastynge partenyth iiij thȳgis .
largenesse to poore folk . gladnesse of herte espirituel
nat to be angry ne a noyed / ne groche for he fastith .
And also rosonable our for to ete be mesour that is
for to seyne / a man schal nat ete in on tyme / ne sitte
the lengere at his table for he fastyth /

schalt thow vndyrstonde that bodyly peyne stant ī
disciplyne or techȳge be word / or by wrytȳge / or in
exsaūple / also in werȳge of heyrys or of stamyn
or of habyrgeoūs on here nakede flesch for crystis
sake And sweche manere panaūcis .
but ware the wel
that sweche manere penaūcis on thȳ flesch ne make
the nat ouyr angery or a noyed of thȳ self / for betere
is to caste a wey thȳ heyre / thā to caste a wey thȳ
sekyrnesse of Ihū crist

And therfore seyth seynt Pou-
le / clothith ȝow as they that been chosȳ of god / in
herte of myserycorde / debonayrete / sufferaūce &
swich manere of clothȳge / of whiche ihū Crist is
more a payed / thā of heyrys / or haubergeoūs or
hauberkys
¶ Thāne is disciplyne ek in knokkȳge of
thyn brest / in scorgȳge wt ȝerdys / in knelȳgis in tri-
bulacioūs /
in sufferynge paciently wrongis that beē
doon to the / & ek in pacient sufferaūce of maledyis
or lesȳge of wordely catel / or of wif or of child / or
othere frendys
¶ Thāne schalt thow vndyrstōde
whiche thȳgis disturben penaūce / & this is in .iiij.
manerys / That is dreede . schame . hope & wāhope
that is desperacioū
¶ And for to speke ferst of drede
for wheche he wenyth that he may suffere no penaūce
