And som tyme / it sourdeth of Enuye /
whan men discoueren a mannes harm þt was pryuee / or bereth
hym on hand thyng þt is fals
¶ Murmr eek is ofte amonges
seruantz / þt grucchen / whan hir souereyns bidden hem to doon
leueful thynges /
and for as muche as they dar nat openly wt
seye the comandementz of hir souereyns / yet wol they seyn
harm & grucche & mrmure pryuely for verray despit /
whyche
wordes / men clepe the deueles pater noster / though so be / þt
the deuel / ne hadde neuere pater noster but þt lewed folk / ye-
uen it swich a name

¶ Som tyme it comth of Ire / or pryuee ~
hate þt norisseth rancour in herte / as afterward I shal declare
¶ Thanne comth eek bitternesse of herte / thurgh which bitternesse /
euery good dede of his neighebore semeth to hym bitter and
vnsauoury
¶ Thanne comth discord / þt vnbyndeth alle manere
of frendshipe ¶ Thanne comth scornynge of his neighebore ~
al do he neuer so wel
¶ Thanne comth accusynge / as whan
man seketh occasioū to anoyen his neighebore / which þt is lyk
the craft of the deuel / þt wayteth bothe nyght & day to accu-
sen vs alle /
¶ Thanne comth Malignitee / thurgh which a man
anoyeth his neighebore pryuely if he may /

/ algate his wikked wil ne shal nat wante

brennen his hous pryuely
/ or enpoysone
/ or sleen hise bestes
~ & semblable thynges

¶ Now wol I speken of the reme-
dye agayns this foule synne of Enuye ¶ First is the loue
of god principal / and louynge of hym self / & of his neighe-
bore / for soothly / that oon ne may nat ben wt outhen that
oother /
and truste wel / þt in the name of thy neighebore / thow
shalt vnderstonde / the name of thy brother for certes / alle we
haue o fader flesshly & o moder / that is to seyn Adam and
Eue / & eek o fader Spirituel / that is god of heuene /
